At the end of the lessons sequence learners should be able to: a) identify and describe (hidden) beauty standards, b) form and express their own opinion on beauty standards and justify it (argue), c) weigh their viewpoint about appearance and beauty standards with society's view on the matter

Activity 1

Activity Instruction

comparing the original (real) photo with the altered one:

- insert the two photos to instagram post template (use template from Adobe Stock Photos)

- place the photos next to each other

- think about what did you chose to alter / change + why

- identify the beauty standards you conformed to; did you do it intentionally or not

- take notes of your findings and observations

learners discuss the outcome of the previous tasks:

- altering the portrait in Photoshop to create the perfect / ideal person + comparing the original and altered photos- reasoning behind the changes they made + identifying the beauty standards influence on their work- social media influence on self-image and self-esteem

activity:

- discussion in plenum

- learners can present their work to the class

- learners discuss their own opinions and findings and also the outcome of their discussions in pairs / threes

questions for debate:

a) What changes have you done; what were the reasons?

b) Who is behind setting the beauty standards? How and whyhave they changed throughout history?

c) How do social media influence our self-image and self-esteem?

d) Is the final goal making the “perfect” person and should it be? Why, why not?

themes and topics discussed:

- why did you do the changes you did, why do you think the person would look better like that, what beauty standards did you conform to…- what is more important to YOU / society - looks or character + why- should we try to “fix” people (genetically) - be it appearance or character traits + why / why not
