Lesson Plan Details:
Learners argue different scientific, political and ethical approaches to address climate and environment issues, assessing their implications and effects through a structured debate
Activity 1
Activity Instruction
This activity will consist on searching for information about the ALTRI textile and cellulose factory project in Palas de Rei. They will be instructed to use as many different sources as they can (newspapers, official websites, AI tools...). They should try to understand all perspectives and opinions involved in the debate: the company´s position, the concerns of local residents, environmental arguments...
Learners will then focus on the role assigned to them, collecting data that support their stakeholder´s viewpoint, so they can use this information in the next activity to prepare their arguments for the debate.
Learning objectives:
- Identify relevant and reliable information sources about the ALTRI factory project
-Distinguish between different stakeholder perspectives
- Select data that will be relevant to construct the arguments
Activity 1 (SciLMified)
Activity 2
Activity 2 (SciLMified)
Activity Instruction
The activity will carry out as it follows:
1. Introduction (10 minutes): the teacher will be presenting the real -life case of the proposed Altri textile factory in Galicia, to put the learners into context once again. The learners will be divided in groups of 4/5 members, depending on the role that they investigated about in the previous activity. In this 10 minutes, the learners should:
- Identify the more relevant data from the previous activity
- Construct their arguments based on what their stakeholder defends
2. Debate (30 minutes): the learners will carry out a structured debate through a moderated discussion, with every group formulating questions to other groups and defending their own position, with the guidance of the teacher.
3. Closing arguments for each party (10 minutes): every group will sum up their perspective.
In the previous activity, the learners were assigned to a specific stakeholder role. These may include:
1. Company representatives
Objective: defend the construction of the factory
Available data: creation of direct and indirect jobs, possible industrial development in rural Galicia....
2. Environmental activists group
Objective: denounce ecological risks
Available data: the factory would consume up to 46 million liters of water per day (Source 1)
3. Local residents
Objective: express local worries
Available data: water pollution in the Ulla river, possible increase in traffic, possible damage to rural tourism and small businesses...
4. Goverment officials
Objective: justify the support for the project
Available data: this project is an industrial investment for Galicia, generation of qualified youth employment...

Activity 3
Activity Instruction
This activity will be the "final decision" of the whole class regarding the opening of the Altri factory. In this final activity, learners will reflect on the arguments presented during the role - play debate and take a step back from their assigned roles. They will now adopt a critical, informed and collaborative perspective to decide whether or not the ALTRI factory should be built in Palas de Rei.
As a class, learners will first review the main points shared by each stakeholder during the debate (for example, the Altri representatives may have given a lot of value to the wealth perspective). Then, they will weigh the pros and cons, negotiate, and reach a collective decision.
To conclude, learners will vote or write a short group statement, explaining the decision, including at least two reasons that justifiy their conclusion.
